Camping in the Gold Mining Camp on the Mokulmne River

Camping is an outdoor recreational activity. The participants who are also known as campers leave urban areas such as their home region or civilization and enjoy nature by spending a night or more nights outdoors which is usually a campsite using tents or cabins or having no shelter at all. Camping is a part of many youth organizations. It is used to teach people self-reliance and teamwork.

The Mokulmne River Canyon was described as an area whose beauty defies description. As written in the Volcano Ledger (Newspaper) in 1855, one traveler wrote, “The most beautiful landscape ever witnessed was there spread out to out enraptured view. Who could look upon that scene and not be reminded of Nature’s God?” It is in this place where Roaring Camp Gold is located. Roaring Camp is a gold mining camp on the Mokulmne River that was once a gold mining camp of the Forty-Niners. It was so difficult to get to this camp that it could only be done by horseback and since it was so inaccessible, most of its gold is still around. In the Mokulmne Canyon, there are three forks that come together making the river look so good. Its water is so clear that guests could literally see tadpoles and frogs swim. In a secluded area of the river there is a quiet swimming hole where guests may swim. Around this area are rocks that go as high as 40 feet. Braver souls may dive from these rocks.

This place is so pretty that one can just sit out there and enjoy everything. Camping on the Mokulmne River can be the best thing that could happen to you because you get to enjoy with Mother Nature, see and feel the beauty of the place. Not only have the owners of Roaring Camp come up with outdoor adventures but also with fun activities that are recreational. Some of their camping activities are: swimming, hiking, diving and fishing. Campers may go swimming in the swimming hole, diving from rocks around the area, hiking on trails once used by the 49ers, and fishing for German Browns and Rainbow Trout along miles of river. Then to highlight Saturday night’s event, there is a cook out of New York Steak Barbeque. For those who are staying in camp, this dinner is free but for those who are not from the camp, they will have to shell out $50.00 for the dinner. First of all, this camp is a gold mining camp in the Mokelumne River and where the camp is situated is in the Mokelumne Canyon. This was the old mining camp used by the Forty-Niners which could only be accessed by horseback. Since the place was so inaccessible, most of its gold can still be found in this place today. In the Mokelumne Canyon is a three pronged river that merges in this camp site. Its clear water is such a beautiful sight where guests can see tadpoles and fish swim. Not only is the river beautiful because of the clear water but also because of the waterfalls and the rock formation that is approximately forty feet high. With such a captivating sight, the owners of the place invite the guests to not only visit the place but to see how their gold mining operations work. Then these guests are also invited to mine their own gold by any of the following methods – panning, dredging and sluicing. Guests are not only limited to camping activities but also gold mining adventures such as panning, dredging and sluicing. This is done allowing the guests to participate in these gold mining adventures. After showing the guests the remote Mokelumne Canyon which was once mine by the Forty-Niners, guests are brought to see the Placer Gold Mine Operation, the Wildlife and Mining Artifacts Museum and the ruins of the past. Gold Mining Camp and Adventures

Mining is defined as the extraction of valuable minerals from the earth. It is required to obtain material that cannot be grown through agricultural processes or created artificially in a factory or a laboratory. In a wider sense mining is the extraction of resources that cannot ever be replaced like petroleum, natural gas and even water. In prehistoric times, flint was mined in France and England. Mining of stone and metal was also done in this prehistoric time. In Ancient Egypt malachite was mine for ornamentation and pottery. In the 19th Century, there was a Gold Rush in California. Then in 1850s, there was a Gold Rush in Australia producing 40% of the world’s gold and was followed by the establishment of large mines such as the Mount Morgan Mine which lasted for almost a hundred years. Today, mining is globalized and the finding of rare earth minerals has increased in demand as a result of new technology. At Roaring Camp Mining Co., there is a gold mining camp on the Mokelumne River. In this camp a lot of gold mining adventures are in store for guests who go and visit the camp. We know that a camp provides outdoor recreational activities. Because the area is rich in nature, rich in history and rich in gold, many of the activities stem from the richness of the place. For example, the beautiful river whose water is so clear, allows the guest to watch tadpoles and fish swim. One good activity here would be fishing.  Then there is a quiet and secluded place termed as the “swimming hole” where the guests can go swimming. There are rocks of varying sizes alongside this “swimming hole” which allow the guests to go diving (for those who dare). There are miles of river to explore, to fish in, and to swim in. They may even go diving. The best gold mining adventure I would say is to actually go mining in the Mother Lode! With such a beautiful sight, guests are also allowed to picnic in the area. There are cabins and tents that could be rented to house these guests. The area is so big, that visitors may go hiking where the 49ers once settled. There is even an area where guest can actually go mining. They can even pan gold or obtain gold by sluicing. Camping and other fun adventure activities may be done in this gold mining camp in the Mokelumne River.
